Lessons Learned from BEHIND the Podium

Welcome to the first installment of "Lessons Learned from Behind the Podium," where I share the valuable insights and lessons I’ve gained from working with incredible leaders and organizations. Today, I’m excited to talk about my experience with a human services nonprofit offering services to meet the basic needs of residents in our community. The leaders there reminded me of the deep connections and profound learnings that come from working in such a dedicated and compassionate environment.

1. The Power of Connection and Support

One of the most striking things about this nonprofit was the leaders’ eagerness to connect and support each other. In a world that often feels isolated and competitive, seeing this genuine camaraderie was refreshing. It reminded me how crucial it is to foster a supportive environment where leaders can lean on each other, share their experiences, and grow together.

2. The Importance of Regular Supervision

Another key lesson was the importance of scheduling regular supervision sessions. We are often too busy with the day-to-day details to take time to have meaningful conversations that support the supervisee’s personal and professional growth. Since we know that employees leave a manager rather than an employer, it is essential for managers to understand how to best support each employee and spend predictable time doing so. It’s a reminder that regular, thoughtful supervision is essential for continuous growth and development.

3. Unseen Dedication and Commitment

The commitment, compassion, and dedication of purpose-driven leaders often go unseen and unrewarded by our broader society. They work tirelessly to make a positive impact, driven by a profound sense of purpose. This experience underscored the importance of recognizing and appreciating the hard work and dedication that often happens behind the scenes. We all want to be seen for who we are and the impact we’re making, and it’s vital to acknowledge and celebrate that.

4. The Double-Edged Sword of Leadership Philosophies

   - One of the most profound lessons I learned was about the dual nature of leadership philosophies. Inspirational ideas and quotes, like Brene Brown’s iconic "Clear is Kind," can be incredibly uplifting and motivating. However, in the hands of an unhealthy supervisor, these same philosophies can be twisted into tools of harm. Clarity should never be an excuse for unkindness. It’s a reminder that the intent behind our words and actions matters just as much as the words themselves.
